LanguageThere are nearly 100 dialects, which are spoken throughout on the different islands of the Philippines, Tagalog developed to a kind of national language (the Philipino), which is spoken mainly in the Metro Manila area and widely used in the mass media. Pilipino is also used as a medium of instruction in schools, next to english. Due to the American past of the country the English language became generally accepted as an official language of the country. Most Filipinos are bilinual, with English as the basic language in business, government, schools and everyday communication. The Philippines is the third largest English-speaking nation in the world, with a small percentage of the total population speaking Chinese and Spanish. |
